Each monofilament represents a unique amount of force, so the same filament applies the same touch every time it is pressed against the skin until it bends. With the patient's eyes closed, the examiner touches the filament to the test site, presses until the filament bends, and asks the patient to say when they feel it. Results at each site are recorded and compared over time. A single 5.07 evaluator suits quick checks at one level, while the hand set of 5 lets a clinician find the threshold across a range of levels.
