Using an Extendable Goniometer

Like a universal goniometer, it has two arms and a central scale, but the arms extend for better alignment on long segments such as the thigh or trunk, and shorten for the elbow, wrist or ankle. Center the axis over the joint, line up the stationary arm with the proximal segment and the moving arm with the distal segment, then read the angle through the magnifier. Using the same landmarks at every visit gives consistent, repeatable range of motion measurements.
