Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a normal fingertip pulse oximeter reading?

A normal reading on a fingertip pulse oximeter shows an SpO₂ level between 95% and 100% for healthy individuals. The pulse rate typically ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute at rest. Readings below 90% may indicate low blood oxygen levels and should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

2. Is a fingertip oximeter accurate?

Yes, a fingertip pulse oximeter is generally accurate when used correctly. High-quality, medical-grade and FDA-cleared pulse oximeters usually provide SpO₂ readings within ±2% accuracy. For best results, keep your hand still, ensure proper finger placement, and avoid cold fingers or nail polish, which can affect accuracy.

3. Can a pulse oximeter detect heart problems?

A pulse oximeter cannot diagnose heart problems, but it can provide helpful information. It measures blood oxygen levels and pulse rate, which may indicate irregular or unusually high or low heart rates. While abnormal readings can signal a potential issue, a pulse oximeter should not replace medical tests like an ECG or professional cardiac evaluation.

4. What activity is not recorded by a pulse oximeter?

A pulse oximeter does not record physical activity, such as steps, calories burned, movement, or exercise duration. It also does not track blood pressure, breathing rate, or heart rhythm patterns. Its primary function is limited to monitoring SpO₂ (oxygen saturation) and pulse rate only.

5. What is a pulse oximeter for kids?

A pulse oximeter for kids is a compact, easy-to-use device designed to measure blood oxygen levels and pulse rate in children. Many standard fingertip pulse oximeters are suitable for kids aged 2 years and above, provided the finger fits properly. Pediatric use is especially helpful for monitoring respiratory conditions, fever, or recovery from illness at home.
